MODULE FIVE: Prajnaparamita: The Perfection of Wisdom

This fifth weekend will focus on the theme of ‘Prajnaparamita’ or the Perfection of Wisdom, which is the culmination of the Sutra path. ‘Prajna’ is a Sanskrit term which is generally translated as wisdom or more precisely as ‘discriminating wisdom’, but this could also be understood to refer to our innate wisdom of discernment or more experientially as ‘transcendental wisdom’. It is difficult to find a precise way to describe this quality of wisdom as it is by its very nature beyond words and dualistic concepts, such as form or emptiness, real or unreal. Rather it is a state which can only be experienced rather than described, through a ‘recognition’ of wisdom. As it says in the famous Heart Sutra:

Form is emptiness and emptiness itself is form. Beyond form there is no emptiness, beyond emptiness there is no form’

This course will follow the text from Gateway to the Teaching starting from Chapter 2, section 6.6. If you do not have the text already it can be downloaded using the link here.
